Abstract
Eng: The functional threshold power (FTP) it has become popular as the standard gold variable for intensity planning and cycling training control. Given the relevance it has gained and due the anecdotal observations in which some differences have been found with the lactate threshold (LT). This being the physiological marker with the greatest scientific evidence to determine the threshold in endurance sport. It is intented in this study to determine the statistical correlation between FTP and LT, for which the 23 male cyclist of the professional team were tested “Boyacá es para vivirla”. Average age of 24,2±5,9, height 1,69±0,11 meters, weight 62,5±13,5 kg, and a sport age of minimum four years. Those who performed a 20-minute constant load test
to establish the critical power and from there, the FTP by subtraction of 5%. At 72 hours the incremental test was applied with steps that increased 10 wattios every 4 minutes, taking a blood sample at the end of each step to determine when the balance between production and lactate removal is broken. To determine said threshold, the increase of 1 mmol or more in blood lactate
concentration, between a step and the one that precedes it, was taken into account. Whose average output power was 250,22 W (±25,92), against the average of the FTP, which was 262 W (82±25). Showing that there is a strong correlation, r=0,957 – p=0,00. However, from an individual point of view, in 99.5% of cases, the FTP was found to be valued, compared to LT, concluding that it would be better to measure than to estimate, since this result must be applied individually, taking into account that the accumulation of lactate is not linear, but, just at the threshold, the inflection point occurs where its concentration in blood is triggered and with it metabolic acidosis is adduced. That is, a strong statistical correlation is a mathematical value that does not necessarily reflect the physiological behavior of each individuo.
